Parent’s Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How old does my child need to be to start diving?
Children can start the PADI Seal Team program at age 8 (pool only). At age 10, they can earn their Junior Open Water Diver certification.
  2. Is scuba diving safe for children?
Yes, when taught by professionals. Junior courses have stricter depth limits and require closer supervision than adult courses.
  3. Do I need to be a diver to enroll my child?
Not at all! While it’s a great family activity, parents do not need to be certified for their children to learn.
  4. What is the instructor-to-student ratio for kids?
We keep our youth groups very small—often 2 to 4 students per instructor—to ensure personalized attention.
  5. Does my child need to be a strong swimmer?
They should be comfortable in the water and able to swim 200 meters and float/tread water for 10 minutes.
  6. What gear do I need to buy for my child?
All gear needed for class is included with the option to purchase mask, fins, and snorkel for your child’s personal comfort and fit.
  7. How deep will my child dive?
10-11 year olds are limited to 12 meters (40 feet). At age 12 and up, they can dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters (60 feet).
  8. Can my child dive if they have asthma or allergies?
A medical questionnaire is required. Some conditions may require a brief sign-off from a physician.
  9. What happens if my child gets scared underwater?
Our instructors are trained to handle anxiety. We start in very shallow water where they can stand up.
  10. How long does the Junior Open Water certification last?
It is a lifelong certification. At age 15, it automatically upgrades to a standard Open Water certification.
  11. Will my child be diving in the ocean immediately?
No. All training begins in a controlled pool environment to master skills before moving to open water.
  12. Are there educational benefits to diving?
Yes. Diving teaches physics, biology, environmental stewardship, and builds self-discipline.
  13. Can I watch my child during the lessons?
Yes, parents are welcome to observe from the pool deck or boat.
